The Governor of Puerto Rico has announced that the Island will be open for travelers beginning July 15, 2020, with health and safety standards set in place.
Open for Travelers
Puerto Rico, a popular U.S. destination, will be open for travelers beginning July 15. The Island’s popular attractions and locations are currently open for Island residents. Hotels across Puerto Rico have remained open, and now common and commercial spaces, such as pools, bars, restaurants, and shops within these hotels can operate at 50% capacity. Tourist attractions and popular sites will be open during this 3rd phase. Tour operators and businesses that rent equipment for activities related to tourists can also resume their business.
Health and Safety Standards
Beginning in mid-March, the Governor enforced an Island-wide lockdown and curfew to manage the COVID-19 pandemic and prevent the crash of the Island’s health system. This has resulted in the lowest rates of infection and mortality within the nation.
The Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) has designed and implemented rigorous standards for all tourism businesses to comply with. They will also inspect and certify over 350 hotels and operators over the next four months that must comply with these standards.
The safety experience begins at the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU/LMM), Puerto Rico’s main airport. They will be using advanced technology to check arriving travelers’ temperature, as well as administer a quick health check-up to passengers arriving on the Island. There will be free COVID-19 tests available to passengers if they choose.
Governor Vázquez Garced has encouraged all travelers to plan their travels early and to adhere to all measures set in place to protect the health and safety of everyone.
